Marriage

Wife: I love you.
Husband: I love you too.
Wife: Shout it to the world!
Husband: *whispers in her eat* I love you!
Wife: Why'd you whisper it to me?
Husband: Because you ARE my world!

Accountability – Ephesians 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

This article was inspired by recent incidents in the lives of my kids (and learned the hard way through my life's experiences).  Praying all my kids will put these important truths to practice in their lives.

It’s important for married couples to be accountable to one another and if you love your spouse you should “check up” on them.  How couples go about this though can mean the difference between a healthy relationship and one filled with suspicion and distrust.

Always be honest with your spouse and reassure them that they can trust you.  Let them know where you are at all times.  Give them details about your day and share information about your experiences with them.  Answer questions honestly.  Remember, your spouse is checking up on you because they love you!  Always being honest with your spouse is the very best way to develop a trusting relationship.

Be careful not to make your spouse feel like you distrust them or don’t believe the things they tell you.  Believing your spouse is up front with you and helping them understand that you trust them makes them want to be honest with you.  When there is an attitude of trust in the marriage honesty becomes second nature.

Never accuse your spouse of something you only suspect but don’t know to be true.  Pay attention to details.  Does your spouse tell you about things that happen while you are apart?  Listen for small, unimportant details, things they don’t really need to tell you.  They are a good indicator that your spouse is being genuine.  It’s okay to ask questions, but do it with an open mind, expecting honest answers.  If the answers you get seem truthful then accept them and don’t dwell on doubts.

Changes in mood and routine can be indicators that something is wrong in your spouse’s life.  Pay attention so you can pick up on these things right away.  Ask your spouse about the changes and encourage them to find solutions to the problems in their lives that are causing the changes.

When you encounter a situation where your spouse is dishonest with you, let them know you’re aware of the deceit.  Calmly and lovingly let them know you can’t tolerate dishonesty in your relationship.  If they apologize and promise to be honest in the future, forgive (Matthew ), don’t dwell on the indiscretion and extend your trust to your spouse once again.

Following these suggestions will help you have a healthy relationship based on trust and accountability.

DON’T:  Nag, be Suspicious, Accuse, or behave Insecurely

DO: Trust, be Honest, Confident, Independent & Interesting
