Make Sure Your Fire is Out!

I want to remind everyone, when you have a fire make sure you put it out before leaving it unattended.

At field day this year we barbecued with “just light the bag” charcoal.  One of the boys poured water on it and I even pulled out the bag with my hands and picked up a couple of coals that fell on the ground, so I was pretty sure it was out.  Then I left it in a garbage bag in my van.

A couple of hours later Tara told me the van was full of smoke.  I pulled out the garbage bag with two big holes melted in it and disposed of it. Thinking I'd taken care of it this time, I went back inside with no worries.

Another couple of hours later she told me the van was full of even more smoke than before.  I went back to find a small pile of hot coals, a big burned spot in the carpet of the van, and one on the wall, a plastic cooler with two or three big melted spots on it, along with a wooden picture frame that was all burned.

My bro-in-law tells me the coals could have ignited the fumes in my van's nearly empty gas tank and started  an inferno in my driveway!

Lesson learned…make ABSOLUTELY sure your fires are completely out!
